Launch
of New Primary Schools Sports Programme (15.02.2000)
Hong
Kong Cricket Association and the Leisure and Cultural Services
Department are proud to announce the launch of the inaugural season
of the HKCA / LCSD Playground League, the first matches of which
will be played on 19th February 2000.
The
Playground League is the first time regular, organised inter-primary
school cricket matches have been arranged in Hong Kong, and
represents a major step forward in the growth of local cricket.
"Hong Kong continues to be at the forefront of cricket
development in the region" said ICC Development Manager, Andrew
Eade, "we may well use the Playground League as a model for
similar programs in other countries."
The
innovative format of Playground League matches, featuring 16
8-a-side teams playing with mini-cricket sets on basketball court
size pitches, have proved popular in trial matches over the last six
months. "All of the kids get a chance to bat, bowl and field.
It gets very exciting and a shame when each game ends" said Mr
Eric Leung, teacher at the Little Flower's School, Shatin and HKCA
Development Officer.
It is
anticipated that with growing interest in cricket at grassroots
level and the increasing popularity of the sport, the Playground
League will expand the number of schools playing cricket regularly
year on year. And by being a fun, healthy and active game it can
only be a good thing for the health of local children.
